WHAT TO EXPECT
Your First Day
When skaters sign up for the Learn to Skate programs they will
need to provide all requested information in order to skate.
On the first day of class the coach will take attendance then
split skaters into levels where skaters will remain for the season or
until they are given coach approval to advance to the next class.
The first day is always a fun one and class starts by getting
the beginners used to the ice and refreshing skills for the advanced
skaters. This is one of the two days parents are allowed to take
pictures from the doorway. The last day of class is the other for photo
opportunities. (Please note: Only one parent at a time allowed in the
doorway, please.)
Apparel:
- Skaters should dress warmly, in layers. As skaters progress
through they day this will allow them to strip off layers, but staying
warm when starting out is important.
- Gloves are required as they are a necessary part of
skating. Occasionally, skaters may be asked to remove their gloves, but
should carry them at all times.
- Helmets are required for Snowplow 1-3. These are provided
at the rink, and anyone in class may use them at no extra charge. Bike
helmets are an acceptable alternative.
General rules:
- During several classes, parents may see younger skaters
assisting their child. These are past students of the program and they
are simply there to help assist the instructors. They should never be
asked questions or be told what to do by a parent. Should a parent need
to address a problem they are asked to take it up with an instructor or
the figure skating director.
- Parents are asked to stay out of the doorway. In case of an
emergency, the doorway should be clear.
- Parents are not to enter onto the ice, unless participating
in a class. If their child slips or hurts themselves the rink staff has
been trained to provide proper care.
- Instructors ask that parents do not disrupt class, unless
in case of emergency. If parents need to speak with an instructor,
please wait until after the class to meet.
Missed classes:
- Should skaters miss a class, make-up classes are available.
During the 6 week sessions skaters are allowed only one make-up class.
- In the event that there is an unforeseen emergency you will
be credited the next for the next session, with director approval.
- Make-up classes must be scheduled in advance at the front
desk.
Other Rink Rules:
- Any destruction of The Glacier Ice Arena property will
result in immediate ejection from the class and the rink.
- Hitting, kicking, biting, pinching, etc. will not be
tolerated. Anyone who behaves in this manner will be removed from class
without refund.
- The doorway is to stay clear at all times.
- Children are not allowed to leave the ice without
permission from their instructor, or in an emergency situation.
- No one is allowed to enter onto the ice unless in a class.
- Shoes are not to be worn by anyone on the ice, except
staff.
- Gum, soda, food, candy etc. are not allowed on the ice at
any time. Water bottles are permitted.
- Glass bottles are not allowed.
- Long hair needs to be pulled back out of the face. Bobby
pins are not allowed on the ice.
- Jewelry should not be worn on the ice. Small earrings and
wedding bands are allowed.
- Some classes require specific equipment, please see your
instructor before class.
- Be on time. Arrive at least 5 minutes early to put on your
skates.
- No sitting on the ice unless instructed to do so. Get up
quickly and keep moving.
- There is to be no sitting on the dasher boards. Sitting in
the hockey boxes is not allowed unless given permission by instructor.
- Do not eat the ice.
- Do not dig toe picks in the ice to create large, dangerous
holes.
- There is to be no criticizing of any assistant, coach,
officials, skater, other skaters, or parents in front of skaters
(including your own) or any other parent.
- The instructors are responsible for handling discipline
issues, if you have a concern it should be taken up with the Hockey or
Figure Skating Director.
- If you must leave a class early please let the instructor
know before class begins.
- Respect yourself and others.
- Have fun and be safe!!
